along very well. some of the road work we've had has been picked up. let's go to interstate 880. the traffic here looks very nice as we drive past the coliseum. also the morning commute is looking good in san francisco along northbound 101 although i do see a little bit of road work on one of the ramps to southbound 101. it's very light and not causing a big traffic jam right now. 4:29 let's go back to the desk. the big game is now just nine days away. san francisco city leaders are considering tough new measures to keep 49er fans in line during the super bowl. ktvu paul chambers joins us from city hall with the message going out to san francisco bars. good morning, paul. >> reporter: good morning. i tell you what the 49er fever can be smelled throughout the area. you can see behind us at the bill graham theater. you already remember a few months ago on the plaza outside city hall the people watched the giants win the world

series. that won't happen for the super bowl because the city doesn't allow public viewing parties. a lot of 49er fans will have a good time celebrating. you can take a look from chopper 2 when fans kept to the streets to keep the partyers safe. mayor ed lee asked people who are serving hard liquor to be a little more responsible. >> serve something of heavy alcohol. any duration sometimes doesn't help. >> reporter: next week the mayor and police chief will visit areas hit by fires and vandals after the giants won the world series. mayor ed lee will help the city discuss a new effect. they hope to use a similar plan last week when the 49ers clinched the super bowl birth. that included adding more officers to the streets.

alex smith about how the two have dealt with the quarterback controversy and how they are doing to work together for a win. in other news san jose police are investigating another homicide. it's the second in two days. the latest homicide happened last night at south side drive in hope street. 4-5 young men walked up to a man in his late 30s or early 40s. they then stabbed him repeatedly. investigators have yet to find a motive. >> there was a scuffle. the victim was stabbed several times in the upper torso. he was transported to the hospital where he was subsequently pronounced dead. >> reporter: now police are not sure if it's connected but they are looking for a gray van that was seen leaving the scene right after the attack. as of now, they do not think this is -- this homicide is gang related. new this morning a warning for parents in antioch about a man who tried to lure a boy into his car.

the mercury news reports it happened near studder elementary school yesterday afternoon. the boy's mother told the school a man approached her fifth grade son and claimed he was sent by a family member to pick him up. the boy walked away and was not harmed. the man was described as driving a light blue 70s era car. only a vague description of him. police say he's caucasian with gray hair and stubble. 4:43 is the time right now. contra costa county high school student was air lifted to the hospital after an argument over the internet. two girls bumped into each other in the hallway. they later posted angry online messages. one of the girl's then attacked the other girl in the school cafeteria yesterday. the victim fell and hit her head. we do not know the extent of her injuries. the principals will urge

students not to argue over social media. the operator of drakes bay oyster farm is suing for the right to operate in the estuary. this comes after ken decided not to renew their lease back in november. people who work at restaurants in san francisco could be getting an extra payday. more than 50 restaurant owners are being targeted for charging extra fees to cover the health care coverage for workers. but the city claims only a third of that money actually went to medical costs. today san francisco city attorney plans to announce a program that would require restaurants and a handful of other businesses to pay back a portion of that money to their employees. also this morning cal trans will give the news media an up close look at the big repair project under way on the bay bridge. they will give them a boat tour of the tower.

the repair job is expected to last into the spring and cost millions of dollars. investigators are still trying to determine why the bar pilot changed course at the last minute and hit the tower but dense fog could be a factor. more digging has begun at a lyndon well where thousands of bone fragments have been linked to the serial killer case. the fbi has decided to concentrate on a new location after getting a letter from wesley sherman time. the fbi has spent two beaks preparing for the new excavation. they hope to find answers for families who have lost their loved ones. it has been 24 years since ilene was abducted. they plan to mark the anniversary with a candle light walk and service. this years event will start at

7:00. the walk will mark the path taken by ilene the day she disappeared. feinstein's new bill is stricter than the first ban she introduced back in 1994. feinstein says the sandy hook school shooting proves the need for a new ban. the national rifle association disagrees. >> our weak gun laws allow the mass killings to be carried out again and again and again in our country. >> i don't care if the weapon holds a thousand cartridges, the point is it has a constitutional purpose. >> feinstein's bill will ban the sale of more than 150 types of assault weapons. and limit ammunition rounds to ten rounds. vice president biden is taking the white house campaign to gun control on the road to

virginia. biden is hosting a round table discussion. president obama put biden in charge of a task force to come up with recommendations on reducing gun violence. state lawmaker jerry hill will introduce legislation to protect mountain lions. it follows public outcry against state game wardens that shot two mountain lions. hills legislation would allow game wardens to rescue mountain lions that come in contact with people. it's another spare the air day in the bay area. you cannot burn wood or fire logs unless that is your only source of heat. air quality managers say the recent rain has not been enough to flush the particles out of the air. it is the ninth of the season

the senate is set to vote monday on a $50 billion emergency relief bill to help victims of super storm sandy. lawmakers from new york, new jersey, and connecticut say the money is urgently needed. sandy hit the east coast last october killing 140 people and destroying homes and businesses. the house passed the emergency relief bill last week. a bay area military unit is heading into harms way. the 129th rescue wing loaded gear into a giant transport plane at moffett field. about 200 guard members will be deployed. while they cannot reveal specifics about their mission they will provide rescue missions. >> we try to get to them within minutes of them being injured. which means that sometimes when we go in, the fighting is still ongoing. >> the rescue wing has been credited with saving the lives

of about 370 people. the roles in the military are changing thanks to the role of women serving in combat. that does not mean every combat position will be available at once. coming up in our 5:00 hour we will take a look at what the new policy means and when women will take on their new roles. in an optimistic state of the state speech governor brown says california is back. the governor says thanks to budget cutting by legislatures and the passage of proposition 30 by voters, california now has a balanced budget. the governor says now the state needs to live within our means and establish a rainy day fund. >> we have promises to keep and the most important one is the one we made to the people if proposition 30 passed. we would guard jealously the money temporarily made available. >> the governor also reiterated his support for controversial projects. building tunnels to advert water from the delta and high

speed rail. it looks like senior officials from the state parks department has dodged a big bullet. they have announced charges won't be filed after allegations they hid millions of dollars in state funds. the funding scandal came as the state threatened to close 70 parks because of budget cuts. the da office said it would be hard to prove any criminal wrong doing. time now 4:46. the investigation into the boeing dream liner is far from the complete. that is according to u.s. safety regulators. the chair says investigators have found what she calls symptoms in the battery fire of a jet in boston. she also adds she has not found the cause of the problem and calls the safety problems quote an unprecedented event. the dream liner has been grounded around the world since last week. with employment claims at a five year low the economic plan is looking brighter. managers say they have hired 70

year. last september apple was more than $705 a share. 4:48 is the time. let's check in with sal. you're looking at san francisco. how does it look? >> it looks pretty good northbound 101 and getting up to the 80 split is a nice drive as you come up to the 80 split with no major problems. the commute also looks very nice if you are driving southbound 101 to the airport and some of the road work that was right there on the ramp is being removed right now i can see the cars with the lights leaving and all the lanes are open. also the morning commute looks good at the bay bridge toll plaza. it's light so far. i hope it stays this way. if you are driving on the nimitz freeway, that is also looking very good. 4:48 let's go to steve. all right, sal, thank you. no adjustment of your set is necessary. a few light showers will continue. patchy fog as well. and temperatures on the mild side. upper 40s low to mid 50s. everybody is pretty close. that cold, cold snap is over but there is colder air on the

way for sunday or monday. few light showers stretching from fremont back to san jose. all coming up from that low which is down off the southern california. a lot of clouds. some sun. mild kind of muggy. few light rain showers. i think most of that should fizzle out later on. 60s for everybody. it's not just going to be in the way of any difference on the temps. one more system sunday. that is a colder one. it will be cool and breezy early next week. it has been a truly remarkable season for the san francisco 49ers. the niners are one of the few teams to make it to the super bowl after switching quarterbacks in the middle of the season. we all know collin kaepernick took alex smith's job after smith was injured during the ninth week of the season. fans agree both have shown a lot of class during the transition. smith and kaepernick still have high praise for each other. >> it means a lot. i think it really shows his character and the kind of man he is.

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. 4:52 is the time. inside the new bore of the caldecott tunnel we are getting a look at where your tax dollars are going. we found crews yesterday with headlamps they are operating heavy machinery, installing lighting. they are working with the equipment there. cal tran says the fourth bore is 75-80% complete and set to open later this year. in over night news a car fire forced the i vassuation of an -- evacuation of an

apartment building in redwood city. the car was parked in a car pot when it caught fire. while investigators aren't commenting, tenants believe it was intentionally set because there were two separate fires one in the front of the car and the other in the trunk. >> i hear the alarm going off. i came down to see what was going on. i open my door and i immediately smoke. >> there were no injuries reported. firefighters did keep the flames from spreading to the upstairs apartment. hundreds of voluntaries fanned out across san francisco to count the city's homeless. the census is taken every two years. collected data is used to provide services to homeless. >> i'm a san francisco resident and this is a way for the city to continue to get funding to help the homeless.
